Route from Meteorite Rest Camp to Windhoek

Our Last Day in Namibia! Once again, we rise early to fully savor the peace and the magical sunrise during breakfast. One last time, we enjoy bread rolls with peanut butter, brew coffee from grounds, and feel the first rays of sunshine warm our cool skin. A hint of melancholy is already setting in. This afternoon, we will return our camper. Our journey is coming to an end, and so we cherish not just breakfast but every kilometer we drive back to Windhoek in this remarkably reliable vehicle.

Today's route takes us 476 km directly to our camper rental company, AfriCamper, with few stops along the way. We set off at 8:30 AM, traveling the first few kilometers on gravel roads. A family of wild boars with piglets trots ahead of us before disappearing behind a bush. However, the father suddenly jumps back onto the road, forcing us to brake quickly. Close call! Large birds watch us from the roadside as the surroundings come alive, once again creating a breathtaking atmosphere.

The paved road soon takes us swiftly toward Windhoek. The environment becomes more urban; children and women cross the highway. Everything grows louder and more chaotic. Civilization has reclaimed us! Before returning the camper, we stop at a car wash near AfriCamper to have it cleaned externally (80 N$).

Looking fresh and shiny, we arrive at AfriCamper and are greeted with drinks. They genuinely show interest in how we enjoyed the trip and the places we visited. Together, we inspect the vehicle. The broken roof rack holder, the table, and the minor scratches and dents are no issue; such wear and tear is expected with extensive gravel road driving. Throughout the trip, we had the option to contact AfriCamper via WhatsApp, which we used twice.

After all the formalities are complete, we take a taxi to our guest house in the city. Our last night in Namibia is spent at Haus Schwerinsburg. We chose this guest house for its central location and outstanding reviews. Perched on a hill, it offers stunning views over Windhoek. The beautiful establishment is run by Izak and Maria Anna, a lovely couple who warmly welcome us upon our arrival. They have lived here for 20 years, raised their children in this house, and have been operating it as a guest house since 2022. It’s the perfect setting to conclude our journey.

After a refreshing shower, we head to the city center. At Seattle Coffee, we enjoy a coffee, chat with a music teacher, and visit the Namibia Crafts Centre. This three-story venue showcases the work of numerous local artists and artisans. We browse through the various stalls and purchase a hand-carved hippo, postcards, a children’s book, handmade bracelets for my nieces, and a framed warrior necklace, which now hangs in our home.

After our shopping excursion, we return to the guest house and savor our final sundowner, overlooking the rooftops of Windhoek as the sun sets in a brilliant red glow on the horizon. For our last evening in Namibia, a delicious dinner is a must. The guest house family recommends “The Stellenbosch Wine and Bar Bistro” and promptly books a table for us.

At 7:00 PM, a taxi picks us up and takes us to the restaurant. The venue is beautiful, offering a multicultural menu. The food is excellent, the wine pairs perfectly, and we relish the opportunity to dine under the open sky one last time. It’s a wonderful evening.

Back at the guest house, we gaze over Windhoek one final time before happily reflecting on how smoothly the entire trip went. Tired but content, we sink into the fluffy bed.
